A. Definition of Simple Past Tense
The Simple Past Tense is used to talk about actions or events that happened and were completed in the past. It shows that an action is finished and no longer happening now.
Contextual Examples:
- • I visited my grandmother yesterday.
- • She watched a movie last night.
- • We played football last Sunday.
- • They went to the zoo two days ago.
B. Functions of Simple Past Tense
1. Completed Action in the Past
Example: I cleaned my room yesterday.
2. Past Experience or Event
Example: Rina met her friend last week.
3. Sequence of Past Events
Example: First, we arrived. Then, we played.
4. Past Habit or State
Example: When I was a child, I lived in a small village.
